Heifer International

 

My charity of choice is Heifer International, a global nonprofit, humanitarian organization dedicated to ending hunger and poverty and caring for the Earth. 

I love this organization because it is based on the philosophy of “teach a man to fish,” and has a 65-year track record of empowering millions of families with proven solutions for ending hunger and poverty in a sustainable way and helping them become more self-reliant.

Heifer currently provides livestock, trees, bees, seeds as well as training in environmentally sound agriculture to communities and families in more than 50 countries, including the United States.

The recipients agree to share one or more of their animals’ offspring, and also the training they receive, with others in need in what Heifer calls “Passing On the Gift.”  This unique development tool multiplies the benefit of the original gift and allows recipients to become donors to other families in need.

Heifer partners are also taught to prevent overgrazing, collect manure for organic fertilizer, plant trees and manage resources for long-term success.  This enables the community to become self-reliant by teaching them how to care for livestock and grow crops sustainably to lift themselves out of poverty and hunger as well as provide a multiplying source of food and income.

Simply put, Heifer’s mission is to help people help themselves.
