October-Review

Review and Be Refreshed

Some people make their resolutions and mark their new beginnings by the start of the calendar year, January 1st.  I, however, will be forever stuck in the school year cycle.  While most people are thinking leaves dying and cooler temperatures, I am thinking about the new beginnings of September.  Blame it on the 20+ years I spent in school or the early years of my career (most of which revolved around school-based programming) or being married to a university professor.  Whatever the cause, my year “begins” in September.

Summers are about being more carefree; fewer obligations and, in my line of work, the job market tends to slow down.  But come September, I am ready to dig in again and return my thoughts to the more serious business of goal setting and life review.

I invite you to snuggle in, enjoy the cooler temperatures, and engage in a bit of review yourself:

Review your five-year goals.   Your intention doesn’t know where to focus if you have no vision.  Dream a little.  And then make a list of what you would like to be doing in five years.  Review your personal and professional goals- hopefully they will not be too separate from each other- and put some real substance behind the things you want in your life.  Make a list; journal; create a Dreamscape (aka vision board).  Create a tangible touchstone that will serve as a reminder of your goals.

Review your professional packet.  You never know when an opportunity might arise when you will need an updated resume or bio.  Do those documents say what you want them to say about you?  Do they tell your “story” in the best possible way?  Take some time to update your documents so they will be ready when serendipity calls.

Review your life balance.  Are you spending time the way your want to be spending it?  Are you saying “yes” to gratifying things and walking away from the energy drains?  Create an Absolute Yes list and make those choices a priority.

You will be amazed at how refreshing these reviews can be to you.  Now you can feel free to sleep blissfully through January 1st and think about more important January endeavors, like snow angels and hot chocolate.
